Digital STEM Challenges

Sphero Golf

Constraints:

  • Code Sphero to complete each hole.
  • A hole is complete when you knock over the marker
  • Keep accurate score on your scorecard data spreadsheet
    • Scorecard Spreadsheet
  • Each time you hit “run” in Lightning Lab it counts as a stroke.
  • You will be coding on the fly.  Play the Sphero where it lies!
  • You must setup the hole according to the maps found below



 

Sphero Out-n-Back

Constraints:

  • Code Sphero to drive out, around the marker, and back
  • Your Sphero must return to within 1 foot of the starting location
  • If you knock over the marker you are automatically disqualified
  • The fastest team to complete the Out-n-Back course (measured to the nearest hundredth of a second) is the winner!

NASA LCROSS Moon Mission

Task:  Drop 2 marbles (a big and a little) accurately onto a target (a box of sand) while travelling down a zipline.  The average distance between the two marbles will determine which group was most successful.

Constraints:

  • 3 index cards
  • 2 feet of masking tape
  • 1 cup
  • 5 paper clips
  • 1 big marble
  • 1 little marble
  • 4 yards of string

*You may use scissors

 

The Marshmallow Tower

Can you build the tallest tower using only spaghetti, tape and string?  The tower has to hold a marshmallow as far off the Surface as possible!  

Constraints:

  • 20 pieces of spaghetti
  • 1 yard of masking tape
  • 1 yard of string
  • 1 marshmallow
  • 18 minutes of time – NO MORE!

When your time is up please measure (to the closest centimeter) how tall off the surface the highest point of the marshmallow is.
